Laminate flooring: Why should I care about VOCs?

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 3.04.29 PMLaminates have gotten a bad rap for bringing volatile organic compounds into your home, or VOCs. The chemical compounds used in the manufacturing of laminate flooring can evaporate easily, affecting the air quality of your home.

The myth is that all laminate flooring is harmful. And that’s just not the case.

There is plenty of laminate flooring containing low VOC content, but you also need to look at Carb 2 compliance when choosing a laminate that’s hazard free. Carb 2 compliance is the limit set for formaldehyde emissions, set by the California Air Resources Board. Some competitors have been known to carry products up to 16 times above the regulated standard, which can be toxic, especially to those with allergies or respiratory problems.

We carry several of the top brands in low VOC, Carb 2 compliant laminate flooring, such as Shaw, Metropolitan, Mohawk and Earthwerks.

These products come in a large variety of colors, styles and price points. They look very much like real hardwood floors but cost less and are scratch resistant, making them an excellent choice for homes with children, big dogs or lots of traffic.

Laminate flooring is not what it used to be. It doesn’t deserve the bad rap it’s gotten in both emissions and quality perception. Laminate flooring can be quite beautiful when given the chance.
