Designer Showcase: An Interview with Mary DeWalt

Mary DeWalt Interior Design“Homeowners have raised the bar in sophistication level,” says Mary DeWalt, multiple award-winning interior designer and Master of Interior Marketing fellow. It’s a reality she attributes to online design resources like Pinterest and Houzz, where she frequently posts about flooring design.

Regarding design trends she says, “there’s been a shift from dark, Tuscan styles to a more modern, minimal look that uses lighter wall colors and natural light to help interiors breathe more.” She recommends incorporating other small details to achieve that modern look, such as under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen bouncing off a tile back splash which can “make the kitchen sparkle.” Or, she says, “we might take the mirror all the way to the ceiling in the master bathroom and put a pin light over the vanity, giving it glamour that’s attainable.”

Another trend is open floor plans. “The kitchen is probably the most important area of the home to buyers,” she says. “We used to hide the kitchen so you wouldn’t see the dirty dishes, but now people want the kitchen to be a showcase.” She adds that people used to want the triangle shape but now we have “work zones” and islands that allow more cooks in the kitchen and bar stools for people to gather around for entertaining.

“Gray is the new beige,” she quips, “and there’s been a huge emmergence of silestone or quartz in countertops which provide a more simple pattern.”

As Austin’s most sought after interior designer for model homes, she had the opportunity to design our current showroom. About working with us she says, “they always have the latest and greatest new products, they’re progressive about the items they carry and they’re always excited to show them to me.” She adds, “the owners, Michael and David, are so accessible. It’s always a great collaboration.”

Thanks Mary. We really enjoy working with you, too.
